David by Michelangelo, Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence, Tuscany, Italy
Arguably the greatest statue ever sculpted is this monumental 17 ft tall statue of the Biblical king David ready to slay Goliath. It was sculpted between 1501 and 1504 by Michelangelo. It was initially commissioned to be placed on the roof line of the Florence Cathedral and later, due to its size and weight, it was decided to place it in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. Its left arm was broken during the anti-Medici riots of 1527 and it was later mended by Giorgio Vasari.
