The Fujiwaras were the regents and the power behind the throne during the Heian Period (794 AD - 1185 AD). Their height of power was during the early 11th c under Fujiwara no Michinaga and his son Fujiwara no Yorimichi. Byodo-in was the villa of Yorimichi which was converted to a temple after his death.
