Buland Darwaza, Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh, India
Akbar built a new capital, Fatehpur Sikri, at the location of birthplace of the Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chisti, who predicted the birth of his son, Jehangir. The city served as the capital of the Mughal empire between 1571 and 1585, the short span owing to the severe water shortages in the area. This massive 54 m gateway is the Buland Darwaza that Akbar built to commemorate his victory in Gujarat. The gateway serves as the entrance to the Jama Masjid that Akbar built to house the tomb of Salim Chisti.
