Avukana Buddha, Kekirawa, Sri Lanka

One of the celebrated statues in Sri Lanka from antiquity is this 12 m (40 ft) tall Standing Buddha at Aukana. It was most likely built in the 5th century AD during the reign of Dhatusena. The statue is not free standing, a narrow strip of rock connecting it to the granite outcrop from which it was carved. As the statue is facing east, best time to view it is in the mornings.
