Rio Bec Route Trip Details
Driving Distances
-
Palanque to Campeche ~420 Km (~4-5 hrs). There is an option of taking the
"cuota" from Champoton to Campeche (last 50 Kms). The toll costs 49 pesos
each way (March 2005).
-
Campeche to Chetumal ~400 Km (~4-5 hrs).
-
Calakmul detour - 60 Km each way from the main highway 186. The road becomes one lane after a few kms. It would take 1.5 to 2 hrs each way.
What NOT to miss
-
Campeche. Easily the best city in the Yucatan peninsula. It is worth spending
at least a day here roaming around the historic downtown.
-
Fuerte de San Miguel, Campeche. Afternoon might be a good time to go to
get the best views of the city. Don't miss the jade mask exhibits and do
climb to the roof for the view.
-
Becan - in quite a decent shape. Do not miss the recently excavated relief
on the south side of estructura X (protected by a glass casing).
-
Museo de la cultura Maya in Chetumal. Easily the best museum in the entire
peninsula.
What is OK To miss
-
Probably Calakmul especially during the hot dry months. The forests don't
look inviting during the dry season and chances of spotting the wildlife
is also bleaker.
Stay
-
We stayed at the Hostal Pirata (YHA) in Campeche. It is situated near many
city attractions. The rooms weren't bad either.
-
We stayed at Hotel Caribe Princess in Chetumal. It was the costliest place
that we stayed on the trip (450 pesos). But the rooms were worth the price.
